Sheep herding was the original purpose of German Shepherd dog breeding. However, whatever duty you set it, it will gladly accept any challenge and overcome it with unmatched bravery and drive. As such, it is also perfect for use as a guiding dog, a dependable rescue dog, and an obedient guard or police dog. It makes an excellent family dog and is particularly kid-friendly when properly taught. However, a life on a sofa would not satisfy the active, spirited dog.
